There was a jar of flour I need to knead the dough.
[ it............ is not! but that sure is a rolling pin being dragged. hm. ]
It's been happening all week - I put something down, and it's not there when I try to pick it back up, or the stove puts out different amounts of heat...
[ Honestly Kaios is just gonna watch the rolling pin being dragged; go off little rolling pin roll your way to freedom, don't let the man tell you you have to roll only on kitchen counters... ]
You think something's fucking with you?
[ Yes, something, not someone. He said what he said.
He also, unfortunately, has no idea where flour might be in a kitchen. ]
...hey. Move a little bit to your right.
[ There's a spoon about to fall... if Ludger moves, it won't hit him on its way down :') ]
... I've never seen it moving right in front of me.
[ that sure is going. with increasing speed!
Ludger lunges for it, so it can't try to launch itself at anyone. which is certainly a distraction from a metal bowl on a shelf starting to wobble its way to the edge... ]
[ On the one hand, Kaios doesn't really care if everything in the kitchen is moving around of its own accord. He hasn't seen the horror movies, it's fine.
But on the other hand, Ludger's been tolerable so far. Kaios sighs and steps toward the metal bowl to grab it, putting the bowl he's currently holding into it. ]
I don't think either of us have enough hands to hold onto everything. What's the stuff that's most important to keep in place?
[ Ugh, that's still weird, those two words don't go together... ]
So... the oven? [ He has no idea what might have a gas line. ]
I was thinking more along the lines of stuff that might do damage if they hit someone. Like the knives. [ Checks the knife block... okay that seems all right for the moment, but now there's a block grater making little shivering motions trying to slide its way along? ]
[He has no objections initially, of course. But once he's confirmed the doors are locked, he's swinging by wherever Ludger's stationed himself, nodding towards the kitchen.]
The oven may have to wait, I'm afraid. [He swears he can smell smoke...]
The front door is barred shut. By what, we can't tell. Conveniently, the window in the front also won't open.
[Normal things to happen in the middle of the night!!!]
I would like someone to check our alternate exits. And to double-check your oven of choice, should that scent of smoke not just be a figment of imagination.
[For the most part, Thancred had been keeping to himself the latter part of the evening, tucked away at a table with Urianger. Chattering about something or other, hard to make out unless you're leaning over their shoulders as 11pm hits.]
--I'd like to get a better look at the area around that well, if we can determine to be safe. I've no good feelings about what came of that earlier today.
[He clicks his tongue as he glances down at what's left of the hot drink in front of him, before turning his gaze towards the doors.]
A moment, if you would, Urianger. I'll not be long.
[And that's perfectly what he intends - to slip out and fetch something and come right back. Except when his hand hits the doors, there is no sign of give.
His confusion is quiet at first. Unspoken, other than a muttering under his breath. A more forceful push creaks the wood and rattles at metal. Nothing.]
...What in the hells?
[Trying the actual handle for a second - no, no, it's turning. Surely he shouldn't have to shove himself at this thing to get it to budge--
Except even the full force of a braced shoulder against the door only earns noise, a slight rattling of brick and the nearest lights, and still no movement from the door.]
[He makes his way to the window and peers out into the night, holding his hands up to block the interior light reflecting off the glass. A frown settles on his face.]
There's nothing wrong with the lock, either... [He adjusts his stance as he raises back to his feet, turning the latch all the way open and putting genuine power into the shove he gives with his shoulder and back. It's enough to hear the cracking of leather against the wood and to see his own body ricochet slightly. But the door still doesn't budge.
He rolls his shoulder as he backs away, crossing to instead check the lock of the window, the condition of the frame.]
Magicks, perhaps? [It's throw out with a pointed glance at Urianger, since that's more his wheelhouse than Thancred's. And here they are without Y'shtola who could probably see something like that clear from the moon if she really tried... is nothing ever truly easy?]
[Urianger would offer to help, but Thancred should be more than strong enough to deal with that door. And yet…nothing. The hells is going on here?
He nods in response to the possibility of Magic playing a role.]
In the absence of any other explanation, I find it very likely. The very nature of our arrival must have involved very complex magicks. Sealing us within an establishment would be but a trifling matter in comparison.
[His gaze drifts back to the door, unease creeping into his expression.]
Yet I cannot confirm it. My senses have dulled ever since I awoke here. I cannot even perform magicks of mine own.
And, well, since Kaios is so kind as to Leroy Jenkins the window and confirm it's definitely not going anywhere, that can leave Thancred to cross back to the Elezen, voice dropping in volume.]
...
A topic to pick Sage's mind about, perhaps. They seemed the magically inclined one.
I'd like to know how they could craft magic, while others can't.
I've already spoken to them about this. They could but offer a hypothesis as they continue to research the topic further- that this worth is exceptionally lacking in magical energy altogether. Not even their magical ability performeth at full capacity, so sayeth they.
[It could still be purely coincidence. But he remembers the reports of the thinning of the aether, of the spells that could no longer hold. Those little cracks that happened even before they were whisked away, that had only widened when the fires first fell in the skies over Thavnair.]
[ Kaios has been just kind of vibing in the cafeteria tonight, having claimed one of the booths for himself. When the rattling of the door starts, he rolls up from where he's just been lying on the table, staring at the ceiling and listening to the weird jukebox music.
Just gonna say he hears Thancred saying the door won't open and— ]
Locked from the outside?
[ He's also going to be making his way toward one of the windows to check outside. ]
[ Welp. If the door's been barricaded, there are only a handful of next steps. Kaios rolls his shoulder, then tugs his hoodie/jacket sleeves down over his hand, twisting them to the inside of his fist. To anyone who might be near the window— ]
Watch out.
[ And he punches the window!
...which would be more impressive if it actually did anything other than rattled noisily in its frame.
So he punches it again, and gets the same result. Which is fucking weird, it's glass... ]
It's a possibility. I can't think of many other reasons to barricade a bunch of people inside a place, can you?
[ He's gonna just... ah, there's one. Kaios grabs a napkin from one of the tables in case it's too high up and climbs on top of another, stretching his fingertips toward the vent. ]
I can certainly claim that it is rarely done without ill intent.
[While Kaios goes to check the vent, Urianger starts gathering a few more napkins in case they need to cover their faces. Not that it'd buy them much time, but...anything helps.]
[ Mechanics like these usually mean there's some sort of air intake elsewhere, so it's at least pretty likely that they're not being Sealed in here...
That doesn't mean they're in the clear, though. Kaios looks at the napkin he grabbed, then sighs and licks it before holding it up toward the vent. He should've thought about that before he climbed up there!!
A few seconds later— ]
There's dust coming out of that air vent. [ Falling on top of all their food... meh, it's whatever. Kaios lifts the napkin to his nose to smell it. ] Nothing else immediately obvious.
[ Shinjiro has been...well, keeping to himself in the kitchen as much as a man can when there's like 5 other people in this cafeteria.
He's rattled out of his pseudo inventory check (that is taking way longer than he'd like, somehow??) by the sound of Things happening, and it's with a grumble he steps out to see what the fuss is about. ]
It's a kneejerk reaction that has him ducking, and said soup ladle skims the top of his head to smack right into the wall with a very loud noise. Needless to say, Shinji looks like a deer in the headlights as he makes a drawn-out strangled noise. ]
[ better get moving, Shinji, because some other objects are starting to shiver their way into the air. Ludger's currently crouched by a prep station, looking frazzled as a whisk goes by his ear. ]
[Wazy, for his part, is apparently content to spend the evening sitting at the bar counter sipping at a cocktail or two, but when there's only a few of them sharing a space meant for several times their number, it's pretty obvious when there's activity by the door. At first, he only turns his head to take a look, but when the shoulderchecking starts, he finally abandons the stool and walks over.]

Hey, I've got something proofing in the oven, so don't open the door.
no subject
[ That's easy enough. But— ]
Why are you bothering? You can just pick something from the menu, you know.
no subject
I like cooking - it's relaxing for me.
[ yes nailed it ]
no subject
[ Is there anything off? Nah, clearly not, everything's fine—Ludger said he likes it, end of story ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ]
no subject
Do you have any requests for bre- ugh. Could you hold this for a second?
[ quick, take the bowl, Ludger's gotta duck his head under the counter and rummage around. ]
Nothing's ever where I leave it...
no subject
What are you looking for?
[ And is it that thing that's slowly being dragged... along... the countertop???? Huh. That's kinda weird. Kitchen's haunted, apparently. ]
no subject

Hm? What's u-
[ and as he goes to move, pulling his head back out from under the counter... the spoon falls... and bonks him on the noggin. ]
no subject
You haven't noticed the stuff moving on its own? There's a rolling pin over there that's making a break for it.
no subject
[ that sure is going. with increasing speed!

[ his noggin... saved. ]
... Well, I'd say anything attached to a gas line should absolutely not move. Anything else is fixable.
[ probably ]
no subject
So... the oven? [ He has no idea what might have a gas line. ]
I was thinking more along the lines of stuff that might do damage if they hit someone. Like the knives. [ Checks the knife block... okay that seems all right for the moment, but now there's a block grater making little shivering motions trying to slide its way along? ]
...wonder if it can be distracted.

The oven may have to wait, I'm afraid. [He swears he can smell smoke...]
Was there any other windows or exits back there?
no subject
Yeah, there's a window and an emergency escape - what's up?
no subject
[Normal things to happen in the middle of the night!!!]
I would like someone to check our alternate exits. And to double-check your oven of choice, should that scent of smoke not just be a figment of imagination.

It's on the warming setting, I don't think it could burn sawdust if it tried. But I'll take a look - maybe the spirits messed with something again.
[ and into the depths he goes! without a care in the world! i hope he gets a concussion!!! ]
"hey fam the doors don't work" toplevel

Thancred? [He shuts the book and begins to rise from his seat.] Is aught amiss?
no subject
[There's very little humor in the statement as he kneels to get a better view of the latches. It didn't feel like anything was locked up...]
I heard nothing towards a commotion outside... Can you see anything from the window, by chance? Signs of a barricade?
no subject
What...?
[He makes his way to the window and peers out into the night, holding his hands up to block the interior light reflecting off the glass. A frown settles on his face.]
I see naught.

[So it's something with the door itself, which doesn't even have a smidge of give to it when Thancred shoves it again with his shoulder.]
If-- ghh -- if there is a barricade, it's something far too heavy to have been moved without some sort of noise.

Windows are reinforced somehow.

Oh.]
Twelve preserve—
[Well. Good to know?]

We should check the airflow. If someone's locking us in here, there's probably a reason why.

[Yeah, this sure would be a prime opportunity to filter something into the air. He really, really hopes that isn’t the case.]
